lw1 Longitudinally:

Here the box is placed along the ship's hull. In this case the box does not come so close to the ships centre line and would appear to take up less space. Although the volume of the box remains the same.

lw1Athwart ship:

In this arrangement the box is projected at right angles to the ships hull. In some cases, depending on hull shape, the box needs to be positioned closer towards the ships centre line in order to clear the bilge. An often used position is the corner against the engine room bulkhead.

Comparison coated and uncoated Boxcoolers

Advantages Al.ms coated Boxcoolers

  • Absolutely no galvanic corrosion
  • Therefore unrestricted lifetime; no renewing of the bundle after several years
  • Does not have to be mounted isolated to the hull
  • Only a few sacrifice anodes have to be placed to protect the sea chest against corrosion
  • Can be used in combination with ICCP
  • the so called ECC or CDU unit does not have to be installed to reduce the galvanic corrosion
  • If welding is done when box cooler is installed and the ship is laying in the water, bad grounding has no effect on the box cooler

Disadvantages Al.ms coated Boxcoolers

  • No natural anti fouling so marine growth is possible
  • If fouling is expected an anti fouling has to be installed (can be guaranteed for 2,5 or 5 years
If during installation the coating has been damaged accidentally it can be repaired (repair set available)

Advantages CuNi10 uncoated Boxcoolers

  • Natural anti fouling as Cu-ions are coming free from the tubes
  • No anti fouling system is required

Disadvantages CuNi10 uncoated Boxcooler

  • Wall thickness of the tubes will become less every year as u-ions from the tubes dissolve
  • Tube bundle has to be renewed after a certain period
  • A lot of extra sacrifice anodes have to be placed to protect the sea chest (ha a negative effect on marine growth)
  • Spacing between the bundle and steelwork of the sea chest has to be as large as possible (the smaller the distance the more galvanic corrosion)
  • The so called ECC or CDU unit has to be installed to reduce galvanic corrosion
  • Can not be used in combination with ICCP
  • If an oxide layer is formed the copper stops to dissolve and marine growth starts
  • If welding is done when box cooler is installed and the ship is laying in the water, bad grounding can damage the Boxcooler
  • Has to be mounted isolated from the hull

Opmerking: The EEC unit (Electronic Current Control) or CDU unit (Control Drain Unit) are controlling the current between the CuNi10 tube bundle and the steelwork of the sea chest. The advantage is that the galvanic corrosion will be less but the working of the natural anti fouling will reduce. Still the tube bundle has to be renewed after a longer period and there will be marine growth.
